Rise…

For a number of reasons I am feeling low and disappointed today and further annoyed because my website won’t support you guys. So I’m holding off on writing a post and instead putting up a Maya Angelou poem that I turn to on days when I feel that the world sometimes demands too much grace of me.

Still I Rise

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I’ll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops.

Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don’t you take it awful hard

‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines

Diggin’ in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?

Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I’ve got diamonds

At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I rise

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.

  1. Speechless! So uplifting! The story of almost every woman’s life. I’m going to print this out and put it where I can see it everyday. Thanks, MM for this.

    • The specifics may wary, but don’t we all face some kind of suppression in some form at some time of our life, just on the basis of our gender?

        • Donno what is bothering you, but whatever it is, it’ll pass. You are the one who gets me to smile on many a low day, MM. Take care and hugs. I’ll like to re-post the poem on my blog, with your permission. It kept reverberating through my mind all yesterday.

  2. Absolutely inspiring! I’m going to repost this on my blog. And print it out and put it up somewhere.

I was wondering when you’d post next. Hope you are feeling better soon and we get to read yet another brilliant post. *Hugs*

  3. Dunno what is bugging you,
but I do know about feeling low,
so just to a word to let you know,
Hang in there, chin up, this too shall go. ๐Ÿ™‚

(I just made that up, just for you MM)

  4. She is one of my favorite poets and this poem especially, is something I keep going back to. But reading this here, today, I can’t think of a better person for and about whom this could have been said. Chin up, MM. You are made of stronger, sterner stuff. Big hug.

  5. MM

I know you are in good hands with the domain thing but just a suggestion. I think if you register a domain name with someone like GoDaddy and let wordpress still serve the webcontent, it will take your load.
do ignore if this “gyaan” is redundant

  6. Oh i do hope you feel better soon. But I have to (honestly)say I absolutely love love this blog of yours…its warm, funny, engaging and personal, unlike your new one.

  7. Phew. I am relieved to see your post. Was beginning to get withdrawal symptoms – with no new post here and that crashed website, I din’t know where to look.

So are you still in the process of moving there or are you going to stick around here for a while?

  8. Why are my comments not getting posted? ๐Ÿ˜ฆ It keeps saying the content is duplicate and I’ve already said that when I haven’t! Argh..

  9. I love this poem – another one of hers that never fails to move me is ‘In and Out of Time’…have you read it?

Whatever the reason for the gloom, I hope your day gets better!

  10. Hey! Hope you’re feeling better now!

Absolutely stunning poem. Thanks for sharing it! I am gonna take a printout of it and put it up somewhere I can see daily. ๐Ÿ™‚

And in your opinion....
