Where I’ve been all this while

In case you’re wondering who died to make me not blog for 3-4 days, well, it was almost me. Heatstroke coupled with exhaustion and sleep deprivation. 103 degrees fever, cold sweats, barely conscious, talking rubbish to poor Sue and Deej who called to find out if I was alive (some might argue I talk rubbish even while in the pink of health but that is not relevant right now) and the OA on tour.

The friend who I had gone to dinner with caught me collapsing on the stairs as we got home and stayed for 36 hours medicating me, giving me nariyal paani, taking care of my kids and keeping my house running. For that I can never be grateful enough. I have no idea what would have happened if he hadn’t been there because as I often say, my maids are incompetent and only kept on because they love my children.

The OA returned and had no sympathy. He said that people who imagined that the world would cease to revolve if they took a break and slept, deserved to fall ill. Remind me again, why I married that man.. please.

I recovered over the weekend and ended up watching Seabiscuit and Rang De Basanti yet again. I’ve realised I’m a sucker for that formula. The loser, the underdog, the tinpot car, the bunch of ragtags making up a football team – and I will support them and cry copious amounts of tears unashamedly right through. Never mind that its only a movie and you know the lame horse and jockey are bound to win, if the producer ever hopes to recover his money.

And as I lay there all weak and recovering, I fell in love with RDB again. I know we’ve been there, done that and moved on from 1947… but each time I read about it or watch something, tears rush to my eyes, this time worsened by the state I was in. The Jalianwala Bagh scenes made me see red and as you imagine hundreds of helpless and unarmed women, children, men, being fired on by the British soldiers you wonder if there is any justice.

The second thing that struck me was the Ek Onkar song. I am not a practising Christian in terms of going to Church and I don’t feel a draw to anything else. Even Buddhism that seems to show so many others peace and light. But for some reason the Golden Temple draws me. I’ve been meaning to go for a while now but I don’t want to take the kids in summer and somehow winter never worked out. I also realise that with all religious calls, there will come a time and when my time comes I will be called and everything will fall into place and I will go. Until then, I wait.

  1. The OA’s not the only one without sympathy for you. Woman, we want our blog posts coming in even when I have grandkids. So. You MUST take care of herself or we will lynch you. I’m booking a ticket to Delhi for Puja vacation… or winter.. can’t live too long away from the place. So. Beware.

And yes, I’m a sucker for RDB too 🙂

And I can’t believe some people have to be threatened before they take care of themselves.
    HMPH.
    Call me troll now.

  2. Hope you are doing better MM. As for the dialouge “people who imagined that the world would cease to revolve if they took a break and slept” I have heard that too several times from my husband. I think you need to make it come true..take a break and sleep tight 😉

  3. Get well Soon MM. Missed reading your blog over the weekend. But everybody needs a break. Hope you feel better soon. Sleep more and relax and you will be back to your rocking self soon 🙂

  4. Hi MM, the Golden temple is beautiful! I have been there. It made me realise what peace there is in devotion, in love for God. Do go!

  5. Very rare for you, but is this a typo?

Shouldn’t “world would cease to revolved” read “world would cease to revolve”??

    Please take care of yourself.

  6. i hope u feeling well lady… take care

and golden temple indeed a beautiful place… i had been wanting to go there for a very long time and finally visited 2 yrs back…

if u go there dont miss visiting wagah border and ofcourse jalianwalla bagh

  7. Just returned from Delhi and cannot imagine the misery of running a fever under the roasting sun. God bless your friend…we can keep reading you thanks to him:) take care! And keep B& B away..nothing worse than recuperating while nursing sick kids.

And I cry during RDB too…

  8. Same thoughts about the Golden Temple – I was there during the summer, barefeet on the burning marble, pouring buckets of water on the stones to cool them, not only for my feet but for those who would come that way. Go, do.
    Get well soon before that.
Fluids, fluids, fluids … and a good book.
    That’s the cure.

  9. Dont do stuff like that to urself. What would have happened if the friend wasnt there to see you collapsing? What if you crashed down the stairs unconsciously? Y’know?
If you feel like you’re not yourself and need a break, just take it regardless of what pressing need (usually only in your head) there is. Really. Everything else can wait.
    Right?

  10. Ouch – get well soon! And come on, everytime, it takes a collapse for you to focus on your health again! take care of yourself lady!

    M

  11. gosh

  12. hey lady.. take care of ur health please..what will us poor folk do without your blog!!! For your sake, I’m willing to put up with one post every 3-4 days. But only on the condition that you spend the extra time resting!

Been there.. done that. And it usually isnt worth it. We just blow it all up in ur heads.

So take rest. And get better soon.
    Hugs for the kiddos.

  13. Your maids are incompetent ?? You haven’t seen the bai that takes care of our kids while my wife and I work our butts off. Indore bais have to be ‘All India worst’.

Never thought I would bitch about bais in public. My wife will be so happy.

    Me: 🙂 you’re a good husband…

  14. Was it …?

Me: Yes it was perakath. deleted his name for obv reasons 🙂 he’s my rock. checks on me when OA travels, who else would bother to take an old fat mommy to dinner?

  15. I think we need to remind you not to blog daily again. Remember you asked us to.

Even during weekdays you blog daily!!!

Lady, you blogs are posts are a lovely read for us, but not at the cost of what they do to your health.

    Get well soon.

  16. Lady what will it take to make you take care of your health??? A good sound kick on your butt (all the way from London) ????

    I am serious here.

Me: sigh. get in line. there’s a loooong queue with ma and OA fighting for head position.

  17. the golden temple is gorrrrrrgeous. it’s amazing to see the sikh youth religiously clean, cook and keep the place running so passionately.

  18. MM- That’s nature’s way of showing us- who calls the shots!

    Please take care……

and I think your husband was right in saying whatever he said……from the looks of it, you are letting MM run ahead of you…….MM is one that exists in thought based on actions on ground…..but the body that house that thought is real…..and it needs care……

I don’t know much about you ……..but still based on what I have read here about your daily routine; you have been inviting this for way too long…..

This comment of mine is bound to attract an angry response…..

But I had to say it and I have said it…..because I care!

Me: thanks alok 🙂 its sweet of you to care and be so nice. someone further up ahead in the comments offered me a kick in the backside. i’ll take your concerned lectures anyday 🙂

  19. I have been to the Golden temple and I know how peaceful and serene it is. If you are there at sunrise or sunset, the atmosphere is really mesmerizing. I love the Ek onkar song…It’s my stress buster.

I hope you are feeling much better and strong now. Take care of yourself. I surely did miss reading your posts…

  20. MM!!!!

    Nijer shorir er khyaal raakho!
Nahole aamake roj entertainment ke provide korbe???

    Hehe, na moja korchi!
Please take care of yourself. And get well soon! 🙂

  21. ‘The OA returned and had no sympathy. He said that people who imagined that the world would cease to revolve if they took a break and slept, deserved to fall ill. Remind me again, why I married that man.. please.’

lol.. love you as a couple, MM!! o:-)

  22. Take care of your health MM..it seemed (and probably was )way too alarming to read that you were on the verge of collapsing…

yes, some songs do soothe the spirit don’t they?
    that song is one such..

    (((hugs)))
    god bless… 🙂

  23. Echoing everyone here… please take care of your health. How will you do all those wonderful things with your kids and blog about it otherwise? 😀

Nahi, but seriously MM – take care and get well soon!

  24. in the long run i think you getting back to good health is best for all of us suckers of your blog!! take care…

  25. You have been tagged for “Honest Scrap Award” at my daughter’s blog…..please visit there and take your tag…

    thanks

  26. Please do take care of your health MM!! More than any of us who read your blog or more than anybody else, you know your kids need you… You HAVE to take care of yourself for them, dont you?

Get well soon and make sure you dont invite this sort of trouble again.

Hugs to the Brat and Beanie… Curious to know how they reacted to you being ill and resting for a change 🙂

  27. Even machines need a break and afterall it is human body. It sure does need a break woman. So take rest…you don’t have to read this comment now. I think you need to detox yourself..maybe you should join Blogholic Anonymous 🙂

About RDB, the Jallianwalla scenes always gets me emotional. The first time I watched it I was about to deliver and I thought it was the harmones, but every single time after that it has been the same true emotions. And you are so on target about Ek Onkar song, everytime it plays in the car, I feel at ease even in bad traffic.

  28. ah well! you my soul sistah! not for falling ill. i am too lazy to do more than my body can take! 😉

but i love gurudwaras! i have no explaination for why. i almost never go to temples, esp the big ones. but the few times i have ben to some gurudwara i feel a peace i dont feel in any other place of worship.

ofcos the yummy prasad helps! :p

    get well soon! lotsa hugs!

  29. Oy girl. Stop responding to comments. go and sleep please.

Ok after that original (not!) comment: Take care, get well soon. And it’s Ok to submit to babying by someone, you don’t have to always be the rock.

  30. Take good care MM! And while on the subject of being away, why not tweet while on blogging-hiatus?

Or wait…. Do you already? 😉

Me: nahiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii *puts fingers in ears and runs away*

  31. Hey there, hope you’re fully recovered now…good health is such a blessing as I’m sure you realise..:)I’m also very curious to know how B&B handled you being laid up…take care and give yourself a treat..maybe a day at a spa?

Me: good as gold, funnily. brat threw a tantrum one day i am told but then he was sleepy.. poor child. otherwise they just came in every little while, threw themselves on the prone mother, and went off…

  32. MM, hope your feeling better now 🙂

Take care of yourself and no mre going out in the hot sun for you and if you do have o go, pani ka bottle and sunshades saath mei and a cap/hat/umbrella if you an so manage 🙂

  33. Hope you are well now.I am with OA, you know how important you are for the babies so you should definitely take care of yourself….you married him for precisely this reason that he will take no nonsense, even from you…heh heh. Take care.

  34. Will you really, truly listen if we be sweet to you and advise you? Say yes and i am ready to try that also….

  35. Tch, tch! Bad woman. (Wags finger disapprovingly.)
    I side with the OA.
(Hope you’re back to the talking-rubbish-while-in-the-pink-of-health mode now!)

Me: 😀 of course. last post is testimony to that no!?

  36. Stop being a badgirl ok? You better take care of your health, else I’m coming all the way from Ireland to give you one on your bum.

  37. Am with the OA. Tough love, thats what you need. You are so like my mom, refuses to take care of herself even when she is sick. You know what a pain in the butt people-who-think-they-are-invincible-and-have-the-constant-need-to-keep-going types are? Someday when your kids are all grown up, they’ll give you a piece of their mind (about you not taking care of youself, it adds to their worries, kids/preteens/teens/young adults should have a care free life, not worrying if their mom is taking care of herself).

Me: 😦 waaaaaaaaaaaaaah. i have no friends. et tu kochab?

  38. Yes yes, the mother shall never fall sick! You take some well needed break. What have you let go since you started work? Knowing you (through your posts) I would say “Nothing!”.

Lets all sign a petition online so that MM will consider taking some time out for herself from her crazy schedule.

P.S.: I am sick too(bad throat and flu-like symptoms) and I realized that the mom can never be sick! The house falls apart 😉

  39. oooooh!*gleeful smile* got a personal update on the B&B’s reaction to their mama’s illness…how sweet!that just brought back memories of how my 2 would just come in and lie on top of me when they were toddlers and then get up and go on with their business! They still try to lie on various parts of me now at the ripe old ages of 15 & 14!

  40. How are you now ?

I must share with you that I am often requested by friends and relatives on the other side to take them to visit the Golden Temple. It so wrecks me with worry that if they go on a sultry, hot summer afternoon they may come back wondering what the hype is about !!! LOL, as if I Goddamn own the brand management biz there!

But seriously, when you go, please visit at 4 AM and sit besides the Sarovar for an hour till daybreak. Thats the Rx.

I often land up by Shatabdi, dump my bag at the “sarai’ in the temple complex, head for Wagah border to catch beating the retreat. Post shopping for “juttis” and Dupattas I am back for langar and the late evening prayers. A quick nap at the Sarai and its time for the magic of stillness, soft shimmer and ‘Asa di var’ .

  42. Checking in waaayyy late this time, MM. Been hellish days at home. More on that later. or never.

If the OA is willing to round up a Shri OA Sena to beat some sense into ye thick, perfectionist, over-achieving yet tiiiny skull – I’m there. I’ll lead the freaking battalion.

You stop this martyr, world-will-go-into-holding pattern crap now, capiche? Now, come here, lets give you a good squeeze!
