Numbers, numbers

Found this interesting site and was horrified as I watched the numbers running and the births being double the deaths. It’s almost like a bad sci-fi movie.

On the other hand the abortion ticker left me open mouthed. There’s one every second. Is contraception no longer fashionable? Or is life unfashionable? Damn – I must have missed that memo.

  1. You know MM, I am a student and I usually stay up the entire night to study. So I catch a bit of sleep earlier in the evening and wake up at 11ish to get started on my studies. And at around 2.30ish my time (i.e. the time in Perth), i’ll get a hot cup of tea, click on your blog and wait till you update it! Hehe I know it sounds a little stalkerish but that has actually been my daily routine for the past few months. πŸ™‚

I really don’t think I have anything intelligent to say about this particular post, but just letting you know.. that I (along with many others) wait eagerly for you to update your blog every night. πŸ™‚ Also, this is maybe the second time I have commented on any of your posts. But am definitely a fan! πŸ™‚

Me: you know – i’m going to start a game. I want one person to unlurk everyday. just to see how many do it. sounds like fun na?! πŸ™‚

  2. How many of the abortions are after accidents in car parks and how many are after sex determination? That’s what I’d want to know.

Me: I dont know. I just feel sad – so many lives being deliberately taken. I’m rather open about this stance of mine. To me either, is bad. Even backseat rides should include protection na?

btw – sorry i didnt stay on – but have you heard this ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YX5Sp-zWFng

  3. Unlurk?!?! But why?!!

Uhoh..i SO shouldn’t have mentioned anything about lurking! The Mad Momma is chasing us away! hehe.

Me: no she isnt! she’s welcoming you πŸ™‚

  4. That count on desertification and emissions is also scary…

I mean just today, as per that clock 271 Hactares has been converted into a desert -I hactares is being shaved off every 5-6 seconds!

CO2 emissions at 1.2 million tonnes for the day!

Even if other things turn favourable, those two pieces of statistic are enough to create a havoc!

    Me:scary na?!

  5. MM

I too wait for your blog updates everyday like Medha, I’ve commented couple of times.I come here through others’ blog, can I get access to come into your blog directly please?

Me: really? but i have no idea why that is happening. surely typing the url in should work…

  6. I am the quasi-lurker. I read you daily but usually do not have much to add so go away quietly. πŸ™‚

Me: heya anita! course i know you. you’re not a lurker at all! i remember people even if they comment only once…

  7. i second Medha…and i dont mind calling myself a MM stalker!

*kicks herself in the rear for blurting this out-runs to look for a place to hide before MM finds her and hammers the shit out of her*

which statistics aren’t scary nowadays, tell me? i dread to think what this world will look like in a few years…

  8. Thank youuu MM! πŸ˜€
You will always have this lurker around! Someone with good intentions (and well wishes) ofcourse.
    Hehe. πŸ™‚

  9. It is so refreshing to read your blogs. I havent commented before but I must say that of late, this has been almost one of the first sites I visit everyday. My husband is unable to comprehend why I would read the blog of a momma when we dont have any kids yet! Its really nice and refreshing to see somebody hold their ground as an individual while simultaneously sharing the identity of a mom and loving it!

Until now I have seen either extreme – people who let go of their identities completely and only become ‘mother of so-and-so’ or people who love the time of day when their kid is asleep so it gives them “freedom”. While I dont mean to undermine either, I just feel your blog gives people like me hope that there is life after kids (and that you arent completely crazy to be in love with your husband).
    Happily married,
    Chaotic Planner

Me: you mean there are people who arent crazy about their spouses?! πŸ˜‰

  10. Hey,no probs.I was about to apologize too,coz I got home and found the internet wasn’t working. While I can do virtually everything on the net from my phone,I still can’t chat.Shall hunt for some apps.

I play that song on my show almost everyday, but this is the first time I watched the video. Not a bad song eh?Although the guy screams a bit too much I think, but it’s still kinda nice.

Me: arre – tell me when your show airs in delhi. saturday na?! i MUST catch it

  11. Seriously, the abortion count is rising so steadily!!! It is scary! It certainly looks like abortion has become a form of contraception! And I am sure sex-determination contributes handsomely too 😦

  12. I also have the habit of opening MM’s page before shutting down for the day.. and some days she writes these very kutti posts with no beanie pics 😦

  13. Another lurker un-lurked. *emerges out of secret hiding place and dusts self*
Although wasn’t this meant to be one lurker a day?

Love the blog, though like chaotic planner I don’t have kids either and don’t plan to for a long while yet πŸ™‚

  14. Those numbers are ticking faster than the clock seconds.. scary!

But, how do I trust their credibility? How can I rule out the possibility of a program running in the background to count up the numbers on the website ..in a defined manner?

  15. Me too!!! Though I have commented once or twice.. I keep checking from 1.30 PM my time since that’s when you do a new post. My productivity @ wrk depends on(obv it’s inversely proportional to) the length of ur post n how many comments u receive..

  16. Add one more to the list…

Never missed any of your posts. There are some posts I have read through all the comments too πŸ™‚

Sorry never commented… but I did vote for you other day hope that counts as a loyal reader

  17. Add one more to the lurker list. I read all the updates but hardly comment! May be only 4-5 times πŸ™‚

  18. Just wondering if you’d count me as a lurker too. I hardly ever comment cos most of the time I dont have anything worthwhile to say. Although I have commented a few times and also poured my heart out to you in a mail..:D.. wonder how many lurkers you have really πŸ™‚

Those stats are indeed scary.. I couldn’t get over the abortion. Very sad. How did you get to this site, and how do we know how reliable all those figures are?

Me: no idea – it was just shocking to see it!
and yes – you arent a lurker – you’ve commented often enuogh to disqualify πŸ™‚

  19. I had the habit of coming to your blog through google search, that doesn’t work but typing in url works. Thanks

  20. Hi Mad momma,
Since lurkers are unlurking, let me count myself in. Though I dont stalk around for new posts, I do so very much enjoy reading them. I may not agree with everything and you do write very well and make the context a very interesting read. I think I love my husband a bit more (I think, if there is anything like loving more/less)after following your earlier blog and I did vote for Indus’s Mother’s day blog.
    So please keep writing.
    God bless.

Me: oh i dont need agreement. thats a popular myth around here!! I just need people to be polite while making a point. see n!’s comment? she and i started off at total loggerheads but NEVER has she been rude in her disagreement. Thank you for the vote πŸ™‚ and even more for stopping by to say hi….

  21. Since the comment section seems to be tipping towards delurkers, I’d like to add in my presence as well πŸ™‚ Though I promise I’d voted for you earlier! πŸ˜›

Me: hey you! I have another sunshine and a good day sunshine but you’re new arent you πŸ™‚

  22. you know all of us should direct these comments (of quasi-stalking MM’s blog or ‘khaaney ka ek nawala pani ke ek boond nahee utrey ga jab tak we havent read her post) to Minoo/Anon from yesterday…hell we should be ready to chip in for the help’s salary as that keeps MM blogging, I dont care a rat’s ass if MM washes her dishes or not.
Now on a sep note did you do the ‘calculate your age’ calculator on the same portal, pehely tau bahut ghussa aya as how dare they penalise my sleeping hours, eating habits, weight etc after all Im a new mom…then realised the same mommyhood and happiness was keeping me younger. Isnt it amazing taht more than a good diet and all its being in a good relationship, happy about life shukar hamdolillah that is keeping us younger and live longer?

Me: there is such a thing? off i go to check it out!

  23. wow now that site is just scary!! ur right – it is like a bad sci fi movie!! maybe im too cocooned in my life…but are those stats right?? 1 abortion every 5 seconds??? really?!?!?! ohmygod!!!!

  24. oh and im a quasi-lurker (is that an actual word btw??) as well! read each and every one of ur posts but comment on very few!

Me: arre hardly. I consider you a .. err… delurked!

  25. Oh no, don’t bother looking for that missing memo, dear MM! Go hug that saucer-eyed beanie and the cute brat instead. πŸ˜‰

Wonder where else would a missed memo bring in such bliss!

Read you everyday the first thing in the morning after the news. Don’t comment often because how many times can a person possibly say, “Love your writing skills, your cogency of thought, the choices that you have made…” πŸ™‚

  26. Me too !! Me too !! Every afternoon at 1.45, I come to your blog and wait for you to update it !! Love your posts MM, but I never comment coz I always seem to agree with you πŸ™‚

Me: geez! why do those assenters not delurk – all i get is a troll every morning to brighten my day! πŸ˜€ kidding… hello and welcome – although i think you’ve commented atleast once before. i’m positive i’ve seen your name before

  27. Lol MM, It took me an entire night and three hours of sleep to realise what you meant by ‘unlurk’ when you said “I want one person to unlurk everyday’! Tubelight only I am! Haha.

Yes yes now I get it!
And see what I started! SO many people unlurking! πŸ˜€

Me: πŸ™‚ well as long as you got it!

  28. ditto…ditto

reading ur blog is a morning ritual with me…absolutely love your opinionated persona and the happy contented soul that lurks behind.

and ofcourse the beanie baby and brat are an absolute delight!

    n yes i voted too….

Me: πŸ™‚ content soul – you can tell, huh? πŸ™‚

  29. ok i raise my hand and say i am not a lurker i do comment here once in a while πŸ™‚

    Me: course you do!

and that site leaves u restless… where is the world heading and in spite of so many abortions i am sure many are teens we are still opposing sex education sigh

  30. Hi MM
I hv been reading ur blogs from a looong time.. but have never commented… sometimes i have been the first read and after seeing no comments, have been tempted to comment, but have not done sooo.. will do it shortly..

i read ur blogs regularly, sometimes as soon as i come to office at 9.30 in the morn πŸ˜€

Me: πŸ™‚ well thats nice to know. so please comment. just as you enjoy reading, i enjoy the interaction. and i’m surprised that all of you seem to be reading the comment and delurking!

  31. the statistics are overwhelming. The fastest growing is the millitary expenses one, wish we could convert it to healthcare expenses ..or may be even half of it!

  32. The running numbers looks like time ticking off my life :). I am not sure how this data is gathered but the abortion figures that happen in the side lanes of India probably dont even make it there. So probably the actuals might be scarier.

  33. Club Mirchi, Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM Delhi, Saturday night, 9pm to 1 am.

Me: excellent. now we all know what to do this Saturday Night.

  34. *raises her hand and marks attendance*

Me too! Me too! Commented a few times but still largely a lurker!

You wished for just one person to unlurk everyday and you got about 20 of them today! Go wish for a million bucks now MM! Or better still, for Farhan? πŸ˜€

Me: beeeppp…wrong entry. you’re not a lurker! I know you. And here I go – I want Farhan to show up at my doorstep tomorrow. *holds breath and sits down to watch the door. Hurriedly exhales as she realises she might not see tomorrow if she holds her breath too long*

  35. What’s all this delurking or quasi-lurker …. I am a regular here…. I AM A REGULARRRRRRRRRR πŸ™‚

BTW, the figures are really really scary….

Me: *bows deeply and respectfully* thats right. you are a regular.

  36. Well, everybody is commenting. Lemme do it too..:D
Although you cant forget me now, can ya…about the post..interesting site it is…the increasing population count and everything..it actually scared me!

Me: I dont forget anyone. And yes – πŸ™‚ I remember the rude ones just as much as I remember the polite ones. but lets put that in the past.. shall we?! πŸ™‚

  37. @ Sravanthi’s comment…
MM, sorry that is so not granted…. he is right now at my door step and i will keep him ( read as cage) forever… πŸ˜›

  38. Hey MM,Count me in too…
Call me lurker or whatever, simply love your blog!!!I come here daily and have commented may be once or twice before:))

  39. oh well. all the stats about everything show that we are screwing up (no pun intended) this planet bad and pushing ourselves towards total destruction…

and still we want bigger cars that burn petrol, print as if we dont know they are made from trees and waste water as if its gonna last foreva…

    the list is endless really…

    gah!

and first parul and now you! delurk divus is becoming a big hit! (again no pun!)

    cheers!

Me: πŸ™‚ Actually i did this last year too. i figured there’d be new lurkers by now!

  40. hey there MM!
a lurker too. not a conscious decision or anything πŸ˜€ i just like reading ur blog everyday so that i know there are other mad mad people who love the mad mad world πŸ˜€

Me: *shakes hands solemnly with her mad sister in arms*

  41. Hey MM,

Me not exactly a lurker but I tend to comment less often because I generally don’t have anything to say. Guess, I should become more frequent in commenting.

Thanks Medha for prompting MM to start this game of delurking πŸ™‚

  42. Oi! Me’s just pointing out that me’s different from the Pallavi above.
And MM’s blog is an addiction. I open it in auto-mode whenever I first lay hands on a computer with an internet connection πŸ˜‰

  43. For the first time i commented on your post yesterday.. Should have waited for one more day na…
Goes off with a sad face..

  44. Hey!me too…delurking…I think-posted twice to wish your adorable “makkals”…I’d like to think that I’m the lone lurker from a very far away country, who thoroughly enjoys your blog-great writing style, very strong views(agree with some, not with others but good on ya for taking a stand-which is more than can be said of me and I’m much older than you!:))beauuutiful pics-pls post a pic of one of the kids everyday-they’ll love looking at them when they’re older..hawt hubby-whatever we can see of him and someone whom I’d like to think I’d have been friends with if we had ever met…take care

  45. Dear MM,

I’d like to bring the below link to everyone’s attention, and because your site is most visited by many people, it’d be great if you could pl allow this link to stay on your comment area :

it’s a CNN poll link, about whether international community should intervene in the Srilanka issue –

    http://internationaldesk.blogs.cnn.com/2009/05/11/monday-poll/

and because you are a journalist, I’d like to know if this poll will have any effect in getting people’s attention.. do you think so?

  46. Hey! You’d probably know this Sunshine better by the name of Suchita. We mailed back n forth about the website issues sometime ago πŸ™‚

    Me: of course! hey you!

  47. Interesting…I found this website jumping around.
    http://www.johnstonsarchive.net/policy/abortion/india/ab-indias.html

The rise in abortions and teen pregnancies in the US at least has been attributed to the lack or total ignorance of sex ed and the abstinence program supported, funded and touted by the previous president. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of teenagers often 14 and below becoming pregnant, a lot of them choosing to have the kid, giving them away for adoption or choosing abortion. There has also been an increase in infant mortality rates – US in fact has an obscenely high number amongst industrialized countries. The new trend is now to refusal to get vaccinated, part of the green trend. People are throwing sick parties where kids with say measles or chicken pox staying at home are encouraged to play with other kids voluntarily brought in by parents so as to get immunized naturally. As far as mad momma goes, you are way out of the loop, infact so way out that you can see the end of the loop πŸ™‚

Me: ah – you mean so far out that the line is a dot?!

  48. Erm, would I qualify as a lurker if I have read every one of the posts on this blog as well as most on your other one? Though I think I did comment once or twice in the last few months.

P.S. I typed the wrong url in the earlier comment.

  49. oh! why is everyone de-lurking? Such pressure…I am a semi-lurker too. Have commented way too less (once?!) given that I read you everyday and absolutely love the way you write!

Me: I’m sorry – you dont qualify for today’s distinction. I’ve DEFINITELY interacted with you. Either on the blog or through mail. πŸ˜€

  50. Delurked thanks to comment pressure πŸ˜‰ though I don’t agree with you always like so many of us here πŸ™‚

Me: I’m going to have to ask why all of you feel compelled to tell me that you dont agree always. isnt that natural with any blogger you read? πŸ™‚ and you dont lurk. i’ve got comments from you. often enough.

  51. delurked.. πŸ™‚ My day doesnt start without a post from you….. I dont comment much, but I did vote for you both times…

Me: but you do comment sometimes, dont you?! i know i’ve seen your name.

  52. Am I qualified as a delurker ?? πŸ™‚

I have been reading your blog for a while now and I love it and I can so Identify with what you write. I started commenting recently maybe couple of times.

Good work and keep going πŸ™‚

  53. I’m a regular too (reader that is) and have commented a few times.

Pliss to count me in as a delurker too.. (raises hand earnestly)

    Madhuri

  54. Hi MM,
Another lurker here. Your blog and Tharini’s are my hangout places at lunch. I have kids who are a few months older than yours. The parenting snippets or sibling interactions you share are closest to my heart. I love how you live your life and how warm and lovely your family is.

  55. If all contraception is 99% effective, for every one billion acts of coupling there are 10 million accidental pregnancies. Or put another way, it would take 100 acts of coupling a second to for 1 unplanned pregnancy.

I’m strongly pro-choice, so this number isn’t all that surprising, is it?

    oh, and also – hola!

And in your opinion....
